Steven P. Ringel, M.D.

Steven P. Ringel, M.D. is Professor and Vice Chair of Neurology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. He served as the University of Colorado Hospital (UCH) Vice President for Clinical Effectiveness and Patient Safety for many years. Since establishing an Office of Clinical Practice at UCH in 1994, he has emphasized clinical outcomes assessment, patient safety, cost effectiveness analysis, and database development. He has authored more than 300 articles and four books covering a broad range of issues in research, patient care, health policy, and patterns of practice. He is Editor-in-Chief of Neurology Today, the widest read periodical in the field of neurology and was the founding editor of “Current Treatment in Neurology” which provides evidence-based reviews.  He is past president of the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) and of the medical staff of UCH.

Dr. Ringel has co-directed the Neuromuscular Section of the University of Colorado School of Medicine since 1976 and he has lead the Department of Neurology’s Quality and Process Improvement program. He continues to have a busy neuromuscular practice and is actively involved in multi-university studies to evaluate drug efficacy in neuromuscular disorders. He helped establish ALSCARE, a national database which implemented ALS evidence-based guidelines and monitored their effectiveness longitudinally.

An honors graduate of the University of Michigan Medical School, Dr. Ringel completed his neurology residency at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center in Chicago and a post-doctoral research fellowship at the National Institutes of Health. He completed a Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Fellowship and served as an Institute of Medicine Scholar-in-Residence working as Senator Jay Rockefeller's health policy aide during the 1992 Congressional session.

His passion for non-medical activities, including his love of Michigan football, the Colorado Rockies, opera, outdoor activities and even Grey Goose martinis, served as an important reminder to all of us that there is more to life than just the job. Perhaps more importantly, Dr. Ringel has taught us that enjoying life made one a better person and a better doctor.
